The Ministry of Power and Energy has taken measures to confer on the people all rural electrification projects that have been completed throughout the island, this November. Celebrating the completion of the third year of the second term in office of President Mahinda Rajapaksa, these projects are to be vested in the people on the instructions of the Minister of Power and Energy Attorney Pavithra Wanniarachchi. While the President has initiated plans to provide electricity to every household in the country by the end of 2014, all measures to achieve this goal are currently underway.  A special survey is being conducted at present to determine the number of households still without electricity. Currently there are 5,591,292 households that have been provided electricity connections, while 31.87 GW hours of electricity is required daily to meet the demand. Meanwhile the Government has also initiated a broader power generation plan in order to meet the ever growing electricity demand in the future.
