Anagarika Dharmapala’s 150th birth anniversary celebrated in India

Reuters (India): Buddhist monks celebrated India’s Mahabodhi temple organisation founder’s 150th birth anniversary. Devotees in festive mood thronged monastery in eastern Bihar Province. The Mahabodhi Society of India in eastern city of Gaya made elaborate arrangements for the event with tents been put up across the monastery. Medankal Bhikkhu, Incharge at Mahabodhi Society of India said that preparations were underway for the 150th birthday of their founder Anagarika Dharmapala. “Preparations are being made for the 150th birthday of founder of Maha Bodhi Society of India, Anagarika Dharmapala,” said he. The Maha Bodhi Society of India was founded by Anagarika Dharmapala in 1891, for the resuscitation of Buddhism in India. The celebrations will last for three days, starting from 15 to 17 September, with the main event scheduled for the third day. As a part of this three day celebration blood donation camps, various inter-school competitions and the third day will see seminars and processions being organised. Medankal added that visitors from across the globe throng the monastery for the celebrations. “Maximum people here have come from India, Sri Lanka and Thailand,” he said. The Mahabodhi Temple complex is located in Bodh Gaya, the place where the Buddha is believed to have attained enlightenment
