The TNA’s second most popular provincial councillor elect, Ananthi Sasitharan, is likely to take her oath of office before a Justice of the Peace in Jaffna on 12 October, boycotting a major oath-taking ceremony being organised by the TNA in the northern capital, the Daily FT learns.
Sasitharan, the wife of former LTTE Political Wing Leader Elilan, had strong reservations about Chief Minister Wigneswaran’s decision to take oaths before President Mahinda Rajapaksa on Monday. Several hardline factions within the TNA believe the gesture that Wigneswaran claims he made for the sake of unity was an unnecessary concession to the Central Government.
The TNA’s only female elected Councillor will refuse to be sworn in before Wigneswaran on Friday 11 October, also on account of it being an inauspicious day for Hindu devotees. She will seek blessings of a Hindu priest after she is sworn in on Saturday, sources close to Sasitharan told the Daily FT.
TNA Leader R. Sampanthan told the Daily FT he was not aware of Sasitharan’s decision. He said the party would adopt a wait-and-see approach. TNA representatives are likely to meet with Sasitharan in the coming days to urge her to reconsider her decision about the swearing-in.
