Archaeology Department celebrates 125 years history

The Archaeology Department this week celebrated its 125th anniversary at an event held under the patronage of President Maithripala Sirisena and Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe.

Addressing the event held at the department premises, the President pointed out that the artefacts in the department are the evidences of a nation’s history.

He emphasised that the present generations should commit themselves to create a better future for the next generation while recalling the proud history of the nation.

While stating that he had received information that 42 top posts of the department were vacant during the last couple of years, the President stressed that all required human and physical resources will be provided soon.

At the ceremony, President Sirisena also garlanded the statue of the former Commissioner of Archaeology Prof. Senarath Paranavithana. The President declared open the Dutugemunu relics exhibition as well.

A number of events have been organised by the department in line with its 125th anniversary. An exhibition held at the Archaeological Department premises from 8 to 12 July will display a number of artefacts including sacred relics recovered from the Neelagiri Seya.
