Commander of the Army Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake has told soldiers in the east that the prime responsibility of the Army is national security, adding that several attempts to destabilise the country had been successfully thwarted by the Army. He said that various international elements are still making this attempt but the initiatives of the President and the Secretary of Defence have made them ineffective, inheriting a strong and stable country to all of us, compared to unstable security situations in the region elsewhere. The Army Commander had said this while briefing troops serving the Security Force Headquarters – East (SFHQ – E) at Welikanda, the Army Media Unit said in a statement. Ratnayake reminded the troops of the significance of national security, discipline and explained to them the series of welfare measures that had been hitherto effected by the Army for the best interests of the troops, thanks to the support of the President and the Secretary of Defence and Urban Development. Referring to welfare projects, the Commander pointed out that housing, soldiers’ uniforms and other requirements, have already been given priority, and thanks to the efforts of the Secretary Defence, many Security Force Headquarters as well as other formations were provided with pre-fabricated buildings in the recent past, as an alternative solution to the shortage of spacious barracks. “The Army Industry which is in the process of producing our metal and furniture requirements would fulfil the needs of our soldiers in barracks within a short period. Similarly, after making structural changes and other reforms in the organisation, the Army is to be made completely environment friendly as we have seen in the Vauniya Manik Farm after conversion,” the Commander added. “As disciplined soldiers we all must show our conduct through word and action. In other words, your conduct is the mirror of your discipline,” the Commander said. (Colombo Gazette)
