Army Commander promoted to General

Sri Lankan President and Commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces Mahinda Rajapaksa, promoted Army Commander Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya VSV USP Ndu Psc to the rank of General, with effect from 01 June 2013.



General Jagath Jayasuriya assumed duties on 15 July 2009 as the 19th Commander of the Army. After completing his education at Royal College Colombo, where he excelled in sports and athletics, he joined the Sri Lanka Military Academy as a cadet officer in 1978.

He passed out first, in order of merit of the Intake-10 and was commissioned as a second Lieutenant on 23 January 1980. General Jayasuriya is a recipient of several awards and military decorations, including the Vishishta Seva Vibhushanaya (VSV) and Uttama Seva Padakkama (USP).
