Army extends general amnesty period

The Sri Lankan Army yesterday stated that the general amnesty period offered to army absentees enabling them to be discharged from the army has been extended. According to sources, the amnesty period, which was scheduled to end yesterday, was extended until 25 April on the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena. Military Spokesperson Brigadier Jayanath Jayaweera told the media that following several requests, the Army Commander, on the instructions of President Maithripala Sirisena and the Defence Ministry Secretary, extended the period by 10 more days. According to the spokesperson, 12,060 absentees have reported to their respective regimental centres since the general amnesty was announced, proving its success.
