Army launches fight against dengue in Western Province

The Sri Lanka Army is preparing to launch a fight against the dengue mosquitoes to eradicate the menace of dengue in the island.
The Army, on the directions of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Daya Ratnayake will launch a comprehensive cleaning campaign to wipe out the threat of resurgence of Dengue epidemic.
The cleaning program will be conducted beginning today (2 June) from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Puttalam and other surrounding areas in Western Province-based Army formations and Army residential quarters.
The program to be launched under the close supervision of Major General U.A.B Medawela, Commander, Security Force Headquarters – West (SFHQ-West), is expected to seek the public assistance too, considering its national importance, the Army said in a statement.
In parallel with the program, the Army, together with respective Public Health Inspectors (PHIs), will carry out a separate survey in areas, highly vulnerable to such dengue attacks, in order to identify mosquito breeding areas and prioritise the conduct of cleaning work in such areas at first on an urgent basis.
The Army said since there is a threat for re-emergence of dengue, it has also decided to support all public or private initiatives for eradication of the epidemic in whatever the way possible.
The Army Commander has also instructed all SFHQs to provide maximum co-operation to such programs in respective vulnerable areas to the best of their ability since the public also have a moral obligation for themselves in the fight against dengue. (Colombopage)
