Army soldier, University student with kilos of cannabis remanded

By Lakmal Sooriyagoda The Kollupitiya police had arrested an army soldier and a university student over alleged possession of 3.65 kilograms of cannabis in Colombo and they were remanded till 8 August after being produced before Colombo Fort Magistrate. The suspects were arrested by the officers of the Special Investigations Unit of Kollupitiya police, while they were behaving in a suspicious manner at the Liberty roundabout in Kollupitiya. When the two suspects were arrested, the university student had 2.43 kilograms of cannabis in possession while the army soldier had 1.22 kilograms, by concealing the two parcels in their travelling bags. The two suspects had been identified as residents of the Balangoda area. Police said that the suspects were believed to have taken the two cannabis parcels into their possession from another party in Balangoda in order to sell it to buyers in Colombo. When the suspects were produced before Magistrate Thilina Gamage, they were ordered to be remanded till 8 August after taking into consideration the seriousness of the allegations levelled against them.
