Attack on Kegalle mosque being investigated

Police are investigating an attack on the Kegalle Jummah Mosque on the Colombo-Kandy Road after a group of unidentified persons allegedly stoned the building causing minor damage to the structure.



Speaking to the Daily FT, Police Spokesman SSP Buddhika Siriwardane said that the attack had taken place around 2 a.m. on Thursday morning and that investigations were continuing into the incident, based on a complaint by the Chairman of the Mosque.

SSP Siriwardane said that two windows had been broken in the attack. Chief Minister of the Sabaragamuwa Province, Maheelpala Herath visited the mosque last morning and held discussions with police in the area regarding the incident.

A conference of all religious leaders in the area had also been summoned to defuse any religious tension and take steps to keep calm in the area.  (DB)
