The attack carried out on the parliamentarians disregarding ethical and political culture, by the mob in Hambantota, is an attack on the public, JVP MP Vijitha Herath said. Addressing a media briefing at the JVP headquarters Herath said the party condemns the attack with contempt. “We condemn with contempt the attack carried out on Parliamentarians who visited Mattala. The attack carried out on the Parliamentarians, disregarding ethical political culture, was by a Medamulana gang of thugs. It was not a resistance by the people,” Herath said. Herath noted that attacking and assaulting people’s representatives is equal to attacking the public and asked the public to rally against such unethical conduct He said the Members of Parliament of both government and opposition could and have a right to visit any state institution and Members of the Opposition could visit the development projects to observe their progress. The JVP MP criticised the police for not have taken any action yet although the police media spokesman has said that the attack on MPs who visited Mattala was by a section of the public that acted unlawfully.
