The Disaster Management Centre announced that due to heavy rain in the southern and Uva regions, several roads were impassable. Wilpita-Akurassa road and Kamburupitiya-Mulatiyana road in the Matara District went under water.
According to its Spokesman Pradeep Kodippily, many roads were also blocked due to earth slips and inundations in Deniyaya-Galle areas. The Nuwara Eliya-Hatton Road was closed once again as the earth mounds fell on the road. Further, due to the overflowing of the Gin Ganga, Neluwa-Kosmulla Road, Dellawa-Tawalama Road and Tawalama-Udugama Road inundated at several places in Galle. The highest rain falls were recorded as: Deniyaya 141 mm, Sirikandura 55, Batticaloa 39 and Ratnapura 71.
Meanwhile, the Met Dept. announced last morning that due to an atmospheric disturbance to the east of Sri Lanka, cloudy skies and showery weather with lightning could be expected in the eastern and northern parts during the next few days. Thundershowers will develop over most parts of the island during the afternoon and night. Heavy rainfall (about 150 mm) is also expected at some places. There may be temporary localised fairly strong winds during thundershowers. The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimise the damages caused by lightning.
