Bangladesh Independence Day celebrated in Colombo

The Bangladesh High Commission in Colombo celebrated the 44th Independence and National Day with festivity and solemnity on Thursday. The day-long program began with a morning session that was kicked off with ceremonial hoisting of the national flag by High Commissioner Tarik Ahsan at the Chancery in the presence of all officials and members of the expatriate Bangladesh community. This session also included reading out of messages issued on this occasion by the President, Prime Minister, Foreign Minister and State Minister for Foreign Affairs. The High Commissioner, in his concluding remarks paid tribute to the Father of the Nation Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the architect of Bangladesh, and others martyrs who made supreme sacrifices for the cause of Bangladesh. He opined that our struggle for freedom has not finished yet. He urged all to contribute from their respective positions to the pursuance of economic and social emancipation of the nation. A reception was organised in the evening at the prestigious Hotel Taj Samudra to celebrate the day where dignitaries and elites including ministers, government officials, ambassadors and diplomats, eminent personalities, media persons, and members of the expatriate Bangladesh community attended. On this day, special supplements were published in leading English dailies of Sri Lanka. A recorded speech of the High Commissioner and a documentary on Bangladesh were telecast in the national television channel (Rupavahini) in the evening.
