  • Veteran Azwer quits to make way for ACMC Ali

President Mahinda Rajapaksa appeared to have sealed the support of Industries Minister and Mannar District strongman Rishad Bathiudeen for his re-election yesterday, after he effected a resignation from a ruling party national list MP to bring an All Ceylon Makkal Congress Provincial councillor to Parliament. Amir Ali, ACMC Councillor in the Eastern Province who joined two other colleagues in quitting the UPFA in the provincial assembly earlier this week, will be given the opportunity to enter Parliament on the UPFA national list. Presidential loyalist A.H.M. Azwer handed in his resignation to the Parliament Secretary General yesterday, sparking speculation that a senior Government official would be given his seat. However, the Government moved to pacify Bathiudeen’s ACMC with the move to accommodate Ali in its national list. The Muslim party has been growing increasingly frustrated with the UPFA and the three councillors quit this week after the ACMC High Command approved their decision. (DB)
