By Chamodi Gunawardana The Bodu Bala Sena (BBS) yesterday announced that they would form a political party and contest the upcoming elections presenting a Sinhala Buddhist agenda. BBS General Secretary Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thero, addressing a news conference, explained that their political party would be led by a layman or a monk. “We have already created our own political plans and expect to implement them at the upcoming elections. However, we are scared to entirely expose our intentions right now to the public because we fear that there are forces that are trying to sabotage our plans and conspiring to stop us from entering politics,” Gnanasara Thero said.

BBS denies allegations by Mahinda

The Bodu Bala Sena yesterday denied accusations that they were responsible for the defeat of former President Mahinda Rajapaksa. “During the last presidential election we gave our complete support to the former president because we believed that Rajapaksa was the most respected leader Sri Lanka had. Therefore we gave our assistance to Rajapaksa considering national security and national interest,” BBS General Secretary Galagodaatte Gnanasara Thero told journalists yesterday. Gnanasara Thero added that they had met Rajapaksa to clear up these accusations with him. “We had discussions with the former President and denied those allegations. However, Rajapaksa ignored our words and made false statements. He has mentioned several times that the BBS was responsible for his defeat. He put our lives at risk by expressing those comments,” Gnanasara Thero stated. “Nevertheless, we do not regret our decision to support Rajapaksa,” Gnanasara Thero added.
