Biswal meets envoys in Geneva to discuss Sri Lanka resolution

The US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Nisha Desai Biswal, who concluded a three-day visit to Sri Lanka on Sunday, met with the Geneva-based envoys of the UN member countries to discuss the US resolution on Sri Lanka’s human right issue.
In a Twitter message Biswal said that she finished a very good day of consultations in Geneva about Sri Lanka on Tuesday.
Before coming to Geneva, the US official met with the British officials in London to discuss the resolution on Sri Lanka.
In London, she met with the British Minister of State at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) Hugo Swire and the officials at the Prime Minister David Cameron’s office.
Swire said he had a productive discussion with US Assistant Secretary on Sri Lanka human rights situation and the resolution to be tabled at the UN Human Rights Council in March.
During her three-day visit to Sri Lanka from 31 January to 2 February, Biswal met with Government ministers, the Opposition leader and Tamil political leaders in Jaffna. She also met the Northern Provincial Council Chief Minister C.V. Vigneswaran and Councilor Ananthi Srithharan, the wife of a former LTTE leader.
At the conclusion of her visit Biswal justifying a third resolution against Sri Lanka said that the Government has shown little progress in reconciliation and addressing accountability in the five years after the conflict ended and the international community’s patience is wearing thin.
