On 27 July, a new bridge constructed by the French consortium Unibridge on the road between Ratnapura and Wewelwatta was inaugurated by Minister of Public Administration and Home Affairs W.D.J. Seneviratne and Ambassador of France to Sri Lanka and the Maldives Jean-Paul Monchau. CEO of the Matière company Philippe Matière and EIFFAGE company International Development Director Alain Baruc also took part in the inauguration. Two renowned French companies, Eiffage and Matière, have combined their know-how and potential to create Unibridge, a subsidiary for the marketing, manufacturing and construction of metallic, modular, permanent and rapid assembly bridges. In Sri Lanka, 46 of these bridges will be built with the financial support of the French Government through a special program whose beneficiaries are a group of 20 emerging countries (Réserve Pays Émergent). France wishes to contribute to the development of infrastructure in Sri Lanka and to promote French expertise in various regions of the country. A bridge on a road between Ratnapura and Wewelwatta, leading to the historic and religious site of Adam’s Peak, this bridge will be an important road link in this part of the country. The bridge is also a symbol of the friendship between Sri Lanka and France. The Ambassador was pleased and honoured to be a witness of this new achievement which will benefit the people and the visitors of Sri Lanka.
