British Minister cancels Lankan visit due to snap election move

British Minister for Asia and the Pacific at the Foreign and Commonwealth Office Alok Sharma has cancelled his scheduled visit to Sri Lanka this week.

The British High Commission in Colombo said Minister Sharma cancelled the visit due to British Prime Minister Theresa May calling for a General Election to be held in the UK on 8 June.

Minister Sharma was scheduled to visit Sri Lanka from 20 to 22 April. Apart from holding meetings with Government officials, Sharma was scheduled to speak at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute on 21 April on ‘Challenges in post Brexit World’.

The event at the Lakshman Kadirgamar Institute at 5 p.m. on Friday therefore has been cancelled, the High Commission informed.
