The Buddhist Defence Foundation will today post a letter to the Queen of England requesting the relevant authorities to conduct an audit to take stock of direct and indirect impacts the Sinhale Nation had gone through due to the influences of the British colonial rule while urging British authorities to guarantee a suitable plan of action to ensure justice.
The President of the Buddhist Defence Foundation Venerable Balangoda Dhammarathana Thera has written this letter which is also scheduled to be handed over to the British High Commission in Colombo today as a mark to commemorate the passing of two centuries since the signing of the ‘Kandyan Convention’.
The letter states: “We feel that it is the obligation of your Majesty to show vision and motive to do justice to the Sinhale Nation and its people who have been at the receiving end of the atrocities of the colonialists. Some of the broad areas that can be considered may include costing for the people that were killed by the British during the liberation struggles, the long and short term economic, cultural, political and environmental impacts of industrial plantations, treasures like the ones still at the London Museum, impacts of establishing an elite social class without awareness or value for local culture, that continue to rule every aspect of policy, polity, economy and vision.”
