CA directs prison authorities to release Tiran Alles

The Court of Appeal yesterday issued an interim order suspending the remand order dated 2 November made by the Colombo High Court Judge against businessman and former Parliamentarian Tiran Alles.

The bench, comprising Justices P.R. Walgama and S. Devika De L. Tennekoon, directed the Welikada prisons authorities to release Tiran Alles from remand, while warning him to appear in the High Court of Colombo on 10 November.

The Court Registrar was directed to fax the order of the Court and telephone the Superintendent of Prisons regarding the court order. Court also directed to issue notice on the respondent Attorney General returnable for 22 November.  

The accused-petitioner Tiran Alles cited the Attorney General as the complainant-respondent. Romesh de Silva PC with Nalin Ladduwahetti PC and Sugath Caldera appeared for the petitioner.

The Attorney General is responsible for filing the indictment against Alles and serving him with an indictment on 2 November. 

Alles and two others were charged with financial fraud amounting to Rs. 124 million through the misappropriation of public funds from 6 December 2006 to 8 February 2009.
