CAA cracks down on rice market malpractices

The Consumer Affairs Authority has taken steps to investigate and prevent misleading activities carried out by the traders all over the island under the guidance of CAA Chairman Hasitha Tillakaratne. 

CAA officers have been instructed to investigate and correct the malpractices in the rice market to stabilise the current situation.

A total of 20,000 kg of rice stock has been taken into custody at Eravoor in Batticaloa which is suitable to use as animal feed but held for sale of human consumption.

Fifty rice bags which were expired was found at two shops in Polonnaruwa District.About 13,000 kg of rice bags were found in Polonnaruwa which were also not suitable for human consumption.

A stock of rice was found which was being sold at higher than the marked price. The necessary information (expiry date, the brand name and the type of rice, etc.) had been altered by the mill owner. This rice stock (75 kg) had been imported from India under a reputed brand name.  

 CAA will be taking legal action against the errant traders as soon as possible.
