Call to probe murder of 600 police officers in 1990

Representatives of the Retired Senior Police Officers’ Association had a meeting with the Chairman of the Presidential Commission to Investigate into Complaints Regarding Missing Persons, Maxwell Paranagama, last week and handed over a memorandum requesting the Commission to investigate matters regarding the murder of 600 police officers in the Eastern Province in 1990. The representatives of the association requested the Chairman to inquire from the Police Department on several matters surrounding the 600 policemen who were killed by the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in Ampara. The association questioned as to whether the murdered police officers have been duly honoured by posthumous promotions, whether the payment of salaries have been made until the age of retirement, if the widows and orphans have received pensions provided to kith and kin of those who were killed, and if there are any other remaining compensation to be provided to the dependents of the slain officers. The members of the association also urged the chairman to find out from the Inspector General of Police the results of the investigation referred to in the file containing reports by the Criminal Investigation Department, as per Inquiry No. C403/92/CM & PA/IG/75/92 of 5 March, 1992. Paranagama assured the representatives that the Commission will take up the matter with the Police Department and provide answers to the questions raised by the association.
