Cameron’s Lanka visit built int’l momentum for UN resolution: UK Senior Minister

British Prime Minister David Cameron’s visit to Sri Lanka during the Commonwealth Summit last year built international momentum that resulted in the UN Human Rights Council Resolution, a senior British Minister said Wednesday.

Senior Minister of State for Britain’s Foreign and Commonwealth Office, Baroness Sayeeda Hussein Warsi told the UK House of Lords that it was right for Prime Minister Cameron to attend the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in Colombo. “It was right to make those tough messages be heard in-country in Sri Lanka. It was right for the Prime Minister to visit regions in Sri Lanka and make his point. It was right that, because of that visit, we built the international momentum which resulted in the Human Rights Council resolution,” she noted. The Baroness was responding to a query by another member of the House of Lords, who said that an even tougher message would have been delivered to the Sri Lankan Government if the British Government had not turned up at the Commonwealth summit.
