Canadian Foreign Minister John Baird led the call for accountability and commitment to human rights at the Commonwealth Ministers meet in New York on Thursday. Foreign Ministers from the Commonwealth Member states, Commonwealth Secretary General Kamalesh Sharma and Sri Lankan External Affairs Minister G.L. Peiris also attended the meeting on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly Sessions. “Again today, I spoke out loudly and clearly on the issue of human rights in Sri Lanka, including on our concerns on the lack of accountability for the serious allegations of war crimes, the lack of reconciliation with the Tamil community and with the events that have taken place since the end of the civil war,” Minister Baird reported following the meeting. The Commonwealth Ministerial Action Group, a powerful eight member grouping of member states that measures states’ compliance to core values and principles of the Commonwealth were also scheduled to meet at 9 a.m. yesterday on the sidelines of the UNGA.
