The Supreme Court decided to hear the petitions filed against the Tamil National Alliance election manifesto on 23 October, when the cases came up before a bench headed by Chief Justice Mohan Peiris yesterday. TNA Leader R. Sampanthan and its General Secretary Marvai Senathirajah appeared before Court yesterday after they were noticed to show cause as to why the case should not be heard last week. The Petitions were filed by Patriotic National Movement member Gunadasa Amarasekera and five others, arguing that the TNA election manifesto violated the Sixth Amendment to the Constitution as it promotes separatism. The petitioners have prayed the Court to suspend the Northern election and proscribe the TNA. The three-Judge bench heard submissions made by the TNA and said they felt there was enough grounds to proceed with the case. TNA General Secretary Marvai Senathirajah, TNA Leader Sampanthan, Elections Commissioner Mahinda Deshapriya and the Attorney General have been cited as respondents in the case.
