CB turns compassionate on diamond jubilee

In order to mark the Central Bank’s 60th Anniversary, the management and staff of the bank on Tuesday freed over 100 cows from slaughter and are making arrangements to hand over such animals to needy families so that they may uplift their livelihoods.

This programme was funded entirely by the management and staff of the Central Bank and supported by several other philanthropists.  

The main ceremony to hand over these freed animals to the new beneficiaries was held at the Kithulawila Temple at Kithulawila, Kiriwaththuduwa. The Chief Incumbant of Kithulawila Temple, Venerable Gnanakiththi Thero and two Organisations that are active in the village, “Diriya Kantha Samithiya” and “Mihithala Mithuro Parisara Padanama”, were associated in this programme. Central Bank Governor Nivard Cabraal was the chief guest.

Around 75 cows are to be distributed among 60 families in 11 villages, namely; Kithulawila, Godaparagahawatte, Bankanwatte, Punchi Irida Pola, Moragahagalgoda, Tharuka Sevana, Kosgahakumbura, Pinnakelewatte, Olabodukanda, Olaboduwatte and Gonawala. The majority of the selected families are of low income category, while also possessing some experience in animal husbandry.   The balance cows are to be donated to the Wadattha Temple, situated off Anamaduwa, where around 75 Buddhist monks reside, and the new herd is expected to support the upkeep of the temple and the resident monks.
