Census on human and property damages due to conflict

The Task Force appointed for the implementation of the recommendations of the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission and headed by the Secretary to the President has prepared a National Action Plan for which Cabinet approval has been granted on 26 July 2012.
The responsibility to conduct a census to assess the human and property damages has been assigned to the Ministry of Public Administration and Home Affairs and the Department of Census and Statistics. This census, which has to be completed within six months, is scheduled to be held in October 2013.
At this islandwide census, detailed information with regard to deaths, missing persons, injured/disabled persons and damages to property will be collected.
The census will be conducted at Grama Niladhari Division level and it is expected to appoint Grama Niladharis as enumerators. Mainly, information will be collected from family units and it is expected to conduct the census within a short period, the Department of Census and Statistics said.
In addition to that, information will be collected from the persons staying at special institutions such as elders’ homes, children’s homes and religious places where conflict affected people are residing.
Public assistance is crucial for the successful implementation of this important census. The public will be made aware of the census through electronic and print media, the department further said.
