Chennai Court sends Lankan to 3-day Police custody over twin train blast

Reuters: Chennai Court sent a Sri Lankan national, Sakir Hussain, a suspected Inter-Services Intelligence (ISI) agent who was arrested in connection with the twin train blasts at the Chennai Central Railway Station, to three-day police custody yesterday.
Hussain is suspected to be connected with the twin bomb blasts on the Bangalore-Guwahati train in Chennai that killed a woman techie on 1 May.
The Q branch of the provincial police had sought nine days’ custody as they were probing the link between Hussain and the twin blasts, but the court only pronounced three days’ custody.
The lawyer of the Sri Lankan suspect, Kanchi M. Jainul Aabdeen also argued that there was a threat to Hussain’s life and pleaded with the judge not to allow the police to subject him to physical torture and permit meetings with the advocate.
“Sri Lankan Tamil Sakir Hussain was today produced by the Q branch police. They were asking nine days’ police custody but the court refused and gave three-day police custody for him. The court ordered that the advocate should meet him in the enquiry and give proper medical treatment for the accused,” said Aabdeen.
Hussain was arrested in a joint operation by Central Intelligence agencies and the Tamil Nadu Police on 30 April in Chennai.
He was reportedly on an assignment to recruit people for terror activities in the southern states and circulate fake Indian currency notes.
His arrest was followed by the twin blast in the train, killing a woman and wounding nine people, prompting a security alert in the middle of a mammoth election.
The low-intensity explosions took place under passenger seats minutes after the express train had arrived at the Chennai Central Railway Station in Tamil Nadu.
Chennai Central Railway Station is one of the busiest railway stations as thousands of commuters use it every day to travel to neighbouring cities and states.
