Child Protection Authority receives over 3,700 child abuse complaints this year

The National Child Protection Authority (NCPA) says it has received over 3,700 complaints so far this year.

According to the officials, 3,785 child abuse complaints were made on the National Child Protection Authority’s emergency hotline number 1929. Of them the highest number of complaints, 956, was received regarding violence inflicted on children.

The other complaints include the deprivation of a child’s right to education (602), sexual abuse (214) and child labour (102).

The highest number of complaints was received from the Colombo District with 569 complaints. The Gampaha District followed with 420, Kurunegala with 283, Galle with 259 and Ratnapura with 214, according to officials.

The emergency hotline 1929 is active 24 hours a day and dedicated to receiving complaints on child abuse and child right violations and for giving an opportunity for children to talk when necessary.

The NCPA says it takes immediate action over every complaint it receives.
