The Catholic Church says it is still awaiting a response from President Mahinda Rajapaksa regarding reports Presidential Elections will take place early next year, clashing with a scheduled visit to Sri Lanka by Pope Francis. Catholic Church Spokesman Rev. Cyril Gamini said that Pope Francis’ scheduled visit to Sri Lanka in January next year is still on schedule as the government has not made any official announcement on the election. Although there was confusion earlier over the Pontiff’s visit because of an impending presidential election in January, Fr. Cyril Gamini said that the scheduled itinerary will not be changed as the Church has not been informed of an election in January. Meanwhile it is learnt that President Mahinda Rajapaksa has not responded to Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith’s letter which was sent to find out whether an election would be held in January. “We have written to the President asking whether there would be an election in January to which the President is yet to reply. Hence we need not jump into conclusion and the planned program will be carried out. (Colombo Gazette)
