The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) yesterday arrested Southern Provincial Councillor D.V. Upul after he threatened to stone to death officers from the Police’s Financial Crimes Investigation Division (FCID).

The CID summoned the Provincial Councillor to provide a statement over his comments last morning. He was arrested later by the CID and remanded until 10 June.

The arrested minister was also produced before the Colombo Chief Magistrate yesterday. The Magistrate issued a directive prohibiting Upul from leaving the country, following a request made by the CID. On 4 June the court instructed authorities to impound his passport.
