Karachi: The Chief Justice of Sri Lanka, Justice K. Sripavan, has emphasised the need for legislation that may directly benefit the masses and all those approaching the courts in the quest for justice.

Addressing the SAARCLAW Conference, which was marking its 25th anniversary in Karachi on Saturday, Justice Sripavan has said that SAARC countries must make concerted efforts in this regard.

Justice Sripavan has agreed with his counterpart from Pakistan Justice Mian Saqib Nisar that both bar and bench must play their role for the cause.

Justice Sripavan said supremacy of law was a prerequisite for the prosperity and healthy growth of any society. The Chief Justice of Pakistan, addressing the conference, said it was incumbent upon the Judiciary to protect the basic rights of people in general. Reaffirming his commitment to the principles of freedom and justice, Justice Nisar said members of the bar and bench needed to be equally cognisant of their responsibilities towards the marginalised sections of society.

The event concluded with a discussion on success and failure in the SAARC region.

Supreme Court Justice Asif Saeed Khan Khosa, senior advocate of the Supreme Court of India K.K Venugopal and other judges of the apex and high courts were present at the occasion.
