Main opposition United National Party (UNP) says the party’s victory at the Colombo Municipal Council (CMC) has indicated that the people did not accept the policies of the current administration.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake told a press conference that the UNP has won the CMC despite large scale abuse of state resources in the election campaign.

He said the people in Colombo have not been deterred by the intimidation, threats and promises given by the government during the election campaign.

Attanayake pointed out that the Defence Secretary had also got involved in the CMC election campaign in violation of election laws.

The opposition MP says that the UNP would continue with the development work in the city although the party did not hold the government.

He said that the CMC could carry out its functions and development work without the power of the government.

The ruling party won 21 out of 23 local government bodies that held elections yesterday. The UNP secured power in the CMC which has been a stronghold of the party for the last 50 years while the Sri Lanka Muslim Congress dominated the Kalmunai MC.
