Academics of the Colombo University yesterday staged a protest and occupied the Vice Chancellor’s office and Registrar’s offices of the College House demanding the VC’s immediate resignation. Federation of University Teachers Association (FUTA) spokesperson Dr. Nirmal Dewasiri told the media: “This decision was taken by the Colombo University Federation of Teachers Associations (CUFTA) as a part of the protest campaign requesting the Vice Chancellor Dr. Kumara Hirimburegama to resign from his position. We called for the VC’s resignation sometime back. But so far he hasn’t responded to our demand. Therefore we are staging this protest today.” Meanwhile, FUTA releasing a statement on this matter also urged the authorities to settle this issue as soon as possible and to enable the University of Colombo to return to normalcy. The press release said: “CUFTA has levelled serious allegations against the Vice-Chancellor accusing him of incompetence and abuse of power. The Colombo University Senate also discussed these allegations in detail. Subsequently, the Vice-Chancellor had excused himself from the next Senate meeting. This is having serious consequences for the management and smooth functioning of the University of Colombo. We call upon the authorities to settle this issue as soon as possible and to enable the University of Colombo to return to normalcy.”
