Committee to re-evaluate mega projects

• Port City, Northern Expressway to be scrutinised by ministerial committee

The Government has appointed a special committee to investigate and re-assess the implementation of large-scale projects commissioned by the previous regime. The Cabinet of Ministers, which met on Wednesday, decided to appoint a committee headed by the Prime Minister to determine if the projects were above board. The Committee, which also includes Ministers Champika Ranawaka, Rajitha Senaratne, Mangala Samaraweera and Arjuna Ranatunga, will make assessments as to whether the projects have been implemented under concessionary loan schemes and whether basic steps have been taken to follow regulations and assess the environmental impact. The Colombo Port City Project, the Northern Expressway project and several other infrastructure projects will be subject to scrutiny by this committee. (DB)
