The signing of the Memorandum Of Understanding (MOU) between Opposition political parties and other groups and individuals has been postponed as the Venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha is still in hospital. Democratic People’s Front (DPF) Leader Mano Ganesan said that the agreement, which was to be signed at a hotel in Colombo on Monday, has now been postponed as the main organiser, the Venerable Maduluwawe Sobitha, was in hospital. The joint Opposition was to sign an agreement on the modalities under which they will work together at the next presidential elections. A meeting was held last week where some amendments were made to the agreement, including a demand that the common candidate of the joint opposition submit a letter of resignation from the post of President before the election. Under the deal, the common candidate who is yet to be picked, will resign from his post within six months of winning the presidential election and also implement the proposed constitutional changes. The UNP, Democratic Party, Muslim Tamil National Alliance, Democratic People’s Front and Ven. Athureliya Rathana Thero are among those who have pledged support to the agreement. (Colombo Gazette)
