The United National Party-led joint Opposition will rally other important stakeholders and players to launch a common platform to address the most critical national issues next month, UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said yesterday.
Attanayake said that the need to come together as a broad alliance to address crucial problems facing the country was emphasised at an Opposition leaders’ meeting held on Monday.
“This will be a new beginning. We will bring the UNP and the Vipakshaye Virodhaya together to formulate this common agenda and then invite other stakeholders, organisations and even political parties to join the movement,” Attanayake explained.
The Opposition would launch the initiative in August, he said.
According to Attanayake, the problems identified as requiring urgent attention was the abolishing of the executive presidency, the reinstatement of the 17th Amendment and the independent commissions, implementation of the LLRC recommendations, combating corruption and the strengthening of the free education and free healthcare system.
