Commonwealth Secretary-General views Sri Lanka photographic exhibition in London

A two-day photographic exhibition was recently held at the Sri Lanka High Commission in the UK. The photographs were a reflection of Sri Lanka’s journey through the 30 year conflict, its achievement of peace, and the post-conflict reconciliation and reconstruction steps being taken.

The exhibition was viewed by Parliamentarians from the House of Commons, House of Lords and the European Parliament, leading Buddhist monks in the UK, London-based diplomats, officials from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office and other Commonwealth institutions, and the Sri Lankan community.

Secretary-General of the Commonwealth Kamalesh Sharma who was in Sri Lanka recently during the Commonwealth Parliamentary Association’s Annual Conference, also visited the photographic exhibition at the High Commission. Sri Lankan High Commissioner Dr. Chris Nonis took time to discuss with visitors, the significance of the various photographs.

Whilst capturing the countless acts of terrorism which Sri Lanka was subjected to during the 30 year conflict, the exhibition was also an apt illustration of the socio-economic development taking place in post-conflict Sri Lanka.

This exhibition was arranged by Media Director to the President of Sri Lanka Sudath Silva and officials of the Presidential Media Unit in association with the Sri Lanka High Commission in the United Kingdom.    

The value of such a photographic exhibition is that it serves to create a much needed awareness internationally, of how Sri Lanka is endeavouring to recover from the traumas of the terrorist conflict, rebuild lives and achieve a lasting peace for its people.
