Communist Party celebrates 70th anniversary with pride

The Sri Lanka Communist Party celebrated its 70th anniversary at Maharagama Youth Centre this week. It also coincided with the 80th anniversary of the anti-Imperialist Suriya Mal Movement of 1933. Speaking on the occasion Chairman of the Sri Lanka Communist Party Raja Kollure said that the Communist Party of Sri Lanka has rendered a yeoman service for the future of the country.   Comrades Dr. S.A. Wickremasinghe, Pieter Keuneman, M.G. Mendis, Ven. Udakendewela Sri Saranankara Thera and A. Vaidyalingam, the pioneering leaders of the party, who provided  them with philosophy, vision, knowledge, strength and discipline to form and build the party, were saluted. On the occasion of the 70th anniversary, they also remembered with great respect and honour the founding leaders of the Suriya Mal Movement and the Lanka Samasamaja Party (the first Socialist Party of Sri Lanka), Dr. N.M. Perera, Philip Gunawardena, Dr. Colvin R. de Silva, Leslie Gunawardena and many others who fought with their leaders as comrades-in-arms. Special mention was also made of Comrades Dr. S.A. Wickremasinghe, Rev. Udakendawala Sri Saranankara, M.G. Mendis, V.A. Samarawickrama, D.P. Yasodis, Bennet Silva and W.S. de Silva who languished in jail for long years with hard labour. Sri Lanka Freedom Party National Organiser and Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa, MEP Leader and Water Resourses Minister Dinesh Gunawardana, Ministers Rajitha Senarathna, Susil Premajayantha, A.H.M. Fowzie, Athauda Seneviratne, Chandrasiri Gagadeera, Vasudeva Nanayakkara, Reginold Cooray and a large number of members from political parties were present at the event. The special Guest of the ceremony, former Prime Minister of Nepal and Senior Leader of the Nepal Communist Party Madhav Kumar Nepal disclosed that Sri Lanka’s Communist Party supports them in their process on democracy, fairness and equality. Sri Lanka Communist Party General Secretary D.E.W. Gunasekara pointed out that an intellectual path should be taken when finding a solution to the national question. Minister Gunasekara further said that the Communist Party acknowledged the need for a new Constitution.
