Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage yesterday granted permission to MP Tissa Attanayake to attend Parliamentary sittings while in remand custody. The former Health Minister of the Rajapaksa Government was arrested on forgery charges and remanded until 11 February. The magistrate, considering a motion filed by his legal counsel Kalinga Indatissa, granted permission for the MP to attend parliamentary sessions on 5, 6, and 7 February. Attanayake is alleged to have produced a forged letter which he claimed was a secret agreement between UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe and the then common opposition candidate President Maithripala Sirisena. Both Wickremesinghe and Sirisena denied that they had ever entered into any such agreement as described by document and asserted that their signatures had been forged before requesting the police to investigate the matter.
