Court impounds passport of Chinese executive

A Sri Lankan court has given an order to impound the passport of a Chinese executive of a Chinese engineering contractor, involved in several mega construction projects in the country. Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya ruled that the passport of San Ya Peng, the Director of the China Harbor Engineering Company Ltd. (CHEC), be impounded when he was presented in court. He was produced in Court on Monday on charges of not paying the bills submitted by a subcontractor for work done at the Mattala Airport, Sooriyawewa Cricket Grounds and the Colombo Port City. Chandana Pushpa Lal of Hai Sei Construction Company had lodged a complaint with the CID that the Directors of China Harbor Engineering Company, which had undertaken the construction work on the Colombo Port City Project, the Mattala Airport and the Sooriyawewa Cricket Grounds, had not settled the bills submitted by his company, which had been subcontracted to carry out the construction work on these projects, the Daily Mirror reported. The CID had arrested the CHEC Director at the airport when he attempted to leave the country. He was produced before Chief Magistrate Pilapitiya and released on bail with four Chinese nationals acting as sureties. The case has been postponed to 2 April.
