Court yesterday refused to grant bail to the driver of former president Mahinda Rajapaksa, Captain Tissa Wimalasena, and extended his stay in remand custody.

Colombo Additional Magistrate Chanima Wijayabandara rejected the bail application of Captain Wimalasena and further remanded him until 10 September.

When the bail application was taken up in Court today, the Additional Magistrate refused to grant bail saying that there are no exceptional circumstances to release him on bail.

Captain Wimalasena and former Puttalam Pradeshiya Sabha member Lal Priyantha Peiris were arrested on a complaint made by the Police Crimes Division for allegedly operating an illegal quarry on a land in the Koratota area belonging to the Land Reforms Commission causing a loss of Rs. 29 million to the Government.
