Court remands four suspected of sending religious hate messages via SMS

The Colombo Magistrate Court yesterday ordered to remand four Muslims, who were arrested yesterday by a special Criminal Investigation Department team of Police for allegedly circulating religious hate messages via SMS. Colombo Chief Magistrate Gihan Pilapitiya ordered to remand the four suspects till 18 August when they were produced before the Colombo Magistrate’s Court. According to the Police Media Unit, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) following a tip-off they received commenced an investigation last month to arrest the suspects. The SMS in question has originated in Kuwait, the Police said. A Sri Lankan national residing in Kuwait identified as Rizwan Mohammed had sent a SMS to a resident of Kurunegala identified as Mohammed Shiraz saying that there will be another riot against Muslims in Sri Lanka after 10 August and a meeting has already been held at the Defense Ministry of Sri Lanka for planning. Mohammed Shiraz and the other three suspects have spread the SMS to many others, the police said The remanded suspects will be reproduced in the Court again on 18 August.
