Professor Dinesh K. Gunasekara on Tuesday lodged a criminal complaint against former Minister Mervyn Silva at the Police headquarters. Professor Gunasekara told the media that he filed the complaint against Silva over an incident where he publicly tied a Samurdhi officer to a tree in August 2010. “That was one of the most inhumane acts carried out by a person holding public office. By doing so Silva violated the Criminal Code and Sri Lanka’s Constitution because only a police or a judicial officer can arrest or detain a citizen of the country. “Since that incident there have been no proceedings instituted by the Police or any other State agency against this act and the person who had carried it out, therefore I decided to lodge a criminal complaint against Mervyn Silva. However, if the police won’t investigate my complaint I will not hesitate to take legal action against Mervyn Silva,” Gunasekara said.
