C’wealth monitors start their work in north today

By Dharisha Bastians in Jaffna The Commonwealth Election Observer mission for the Northern Provincial Council election will deploy in all five districts of the province today in preparation for the Saturday poll. The five member observer mission from Commonwealth member states hoped for a free and fair electoral process ahead of the first Provincial Council election in the formerly embattled north in 25 years. The Mission that arrived in Colombo on Saturday (14) had briefings in the capital before arriving in Jaffna for more discussions. The Commonwealth mission is being led by former Kenyan Vice President Stephen Kalonzo Musyoka and includes the former Electoral Officer for Victoria, Australia Jenni McMullan, former Chief Election Commissioner of Bangladesh Dr. Shamsul Huda and Examin Philbert the Secretary of the Caribbean Association of Local Government Authorities, Saint Lucia. One monitor and a team will deploy to each of the five districts; Vavuniya, Kilinochchi, Mannar, Jaffna and Mullaitivu, that will poll on Saturday.
