UNP Kurunegala District MP Dayasiri Jayasekera has never indicated he would be joining the Government, Party General Secretary Tissa Attanayake claimed yesterday. Queried at a media briefing in Rajagiriya, Attanayake said Jayasekera had not informed the party of such a move. “There have been media reports saying so – in fact, I have seen some headlines. But I also saw statements from the MP himself saying he would not join,” Attanayake said, reiterating that he had not been informed of such a move. The UNP General Secretary said that it was MPs from the Government who were actually contemplating abandoning the sinking ship. “This Government is actually a sinking ship. So rather than people getting onboard, I think people are trying to get off. Nobody would be stupid enough to join this Government now. Anyone who joins now must be prepared to sink too,” he said. Speculation has been widespread about the possible crossover of Jayasekera after he held discussions with President Mahinda Rajapaksa late last week. Sources said that Jayasekera was tipped to be nominated to a senior position to contest at the forthcoming provincial elections if he joined the UPFA. (DB)
