Death toll rises to 12

The death toll in the gale that hit the southern coastal belt has risen to 12 including eight fishermen, and four others.

Six bodies of fishermen washed ashore in Matara whilst some others died due to falling trees.

Five fishing boats have been destroyed and 12 others are reported missing.

A gale blowing at a speed of about 40km per hour caused havoc in the Matara area.
