Fifty Sri Lankans who were deported by the UK rejecting their pleas for political asylum returned to Sri Lanka today.

The deportees accompanied by about 100 security personnel of UK arrived in the country this morning in a special flight chartered by the UK Border Agency.

The deported Sri Lankans included 42 males and eight females.

Airport sources said the deportees were interrogated by the Criminal Investigation Department.

The British government’s move has drawn criticism from human rights groups expressing concern over the safety of the deportees, mostly of Tamil minority.

A large number of Sri Lankans seek asylum in UK on false grounds aiming to find green pastures there. The government of UK has become increasingly tough on the false claims and 235 such persons were deported last year alone, reports say. (www.lankapage.com)
