Thirteen suspects arrested by the Kalkudah Police arrested in connection with the alleged brutal assault of the son of Batticaloa DIG Ravi Waidyalankara were released on Police Bail on Monday night.

One suspect was the son of senior Cabinet Minister Maithripala Sirisena.

The Minister’s son and a group of his friends had been holidaying in a high-end resort at Pasikudah in the Eastern Province. The altercation occurred after DIG Waidyalankara’s son Asela approached the allegedly inebriated group and objected to them taking indecent pictures that featured himself and his wife in the background.

Asela Waidyalankara was admitted to the Batticaloa General Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit after sustaining serious injuries from the attack, sources told the Daily FT. He has since been transferred to a private hospital in Colombo the sources said.

The Daily FT learns that several of the suspects had obtained medical certificates that alleged they had also been injured in the confrontation.
