The Vice Chancellor of the Jaffna University in Sri Lanka will meet with faculty deans and lecturers on Monday (7) to discuss the re-opening of the university closed since November 30.

The Jaffna University ceased to function after students and lecturers decided to boycott classes demanding the release of four university students in military custody following a clash last November between the students and security forces personnel.

University sources have been quoted in the local media saying that academic activities at the university were likely to re-commence on January 16th.

The four Jaffna University students detained at the Welikanda military camp have reportedly informed their colleagues to resume academic activities since the security forces have promised to release them soon.

The students were arrested on charges of supporting terrorist activities following the clash between university students and the security forces on November 27th when the students tried to commemorate the dead fighters of the former terrorist organization on its Heroes’ Day (Mahaveer Day).
